About Centennial Preschool
Welcome to Centennial Preschool!
The Centennial School District provides high-quality part-day and full-day preschool experiences. Full-day classrooms are located at each of the elementary schools in the district; part-day classes take place at the Early Childhood Center. Centennial Preschool prioritizes:

Preparing Learners for Classroom Success
The goal of Centennial Preschool is to help children enter kindergarten with the skills and behaviors necessary to be successful learners. This goal can be met in both part-day and full-day classes. Unlike day care, which focuses on meeting the need for care during a parent's workday, Centennial Preschool focuses on exposure to and repetition of the skills and routines of school readiness while still offering care before and/or after preschool. Following the MN Department of Education's Successful Learner Equation, we are ready to meet students wherever they are in their development.
Parent Involvement
Throughout this web-brochure the term "parent" includes any adult caregiver for a student. Centennial Preschool welcomes parents, foster parents, grandparents, babysitters/nannies, and other caregivers. Most part-day classes at the Early Childhood Center include a regular parent attendance day, while full-day classes offer special opportunities for parent participation. Centennial Preschool places an emphasis on parental involvement because research has shown that early childhood programs that involve parents and children learning together are more effective than programs that focus only on the child.
Experienced, Caring Staff
Centennial Preschool is held in classrooms with a 1 to 10 staff-to-student ratio, taught by preschool teachers. Both teachers and classroom support staff receive ongoing staff development. Our preschool program has earned a 4-Star Parent Aware rating, which means our program meets high quality indicators in training, curriculum and assessment.
Our Families Say

“[My daughter] comes home every day saying “it was the best day ever except for going to the Taylor Swift concert!” (her exact words!) and talks about all her friends and the fun things they did. She loves all the different activities her teachers do with them and how engaging they are with her.”
"Ms. Maria, Ms. Lisa, and Ms. Patrice are so wonderful! They are kind, patient, and excellent teachers. My son is LOVING preschool and is so happy to go each day -- this is thanks to having such wonderful staff who put such thought and caring into the planning of their day!"

“Molly is fantastic and shows that she really cares about our children. Ms. Cindy is also awesome, helping out the little ones when they are having a rough day. Amanda is the absolute best and Angela is wonderful. Really liked having both parent educators, the different teaching styles between the two are always fun.”

“Sam is so caring, it was a big transition for our son and she has been amazing!”
"Ms. Susie is so sweet and caring with my daughter, even when drop off has been hard."
"The entire staff are so incredible. Our daughter always talks about how kind they are. Every interaction we have had with staff has been so positive and productive."
When surveyed, 97% of preschool families felt that preschool is helping their child be fully prepared for kindergarten with the skills and behaviors necessary to be successful.
Options for Ages 4 & Up
Full-Day Classes (for students who have turned 4 on or before September 1, 2026)
In addition to academic and social learning, our full-day classes focus on building skills needed for a successful transition to kindergarten the following year. Full-day classes have several early release days throughout the year to allow for staff trainings and meetings. See the Early Release Days section below.

Once a student has started a class, schedule changes are allowed only if space available.
4-year-olds are welcome to attend any Centennial Preschool class, including those in the next section.
Options for Ages 3 & Up
Part-Day Classes (for students who have turned 3 on or before September 1, 2026)
These classes are intended to be a student's first preschool experience. Play is the main focus, providing the structure through which students grow more familiar with the classroom, their peers, and spending class time away from their parents. A parent (or other adult) is required to attend with the child one day each week as noted. (1/29/26: Parent Attends days are now updated.)

Centennial Outdoor Explorers Preschool (for students who are at least 3-1/2 as of September 1, 2026)
See description in Outdoor Learning Opportunities section below. Class takes place in an outdoor classroom and includes treks into the adjacent Rice Creek Chain of Lakes park. Parents attend bimonthly sessions on Mondays with their child at Wargo Nature Center.

Once a student has started a class, schedule changes are allowed only if space available.
Not sure if your child is ready for an independent preschool experience? Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) has options for you! Registration for these classes will be open in spring. See ECFE or call 763-792-6120 for more information.
Parents & Preschoolers (2-1/2 to 4 Years)
This once-a-week class provides some of the structures and content of the preschool curriculum but a parent or caregiver attends class every week with the child.
Step Up to Preschool (2-3/4 to 5 Years)
Students may join this class to begin working on their independence. We start the year as a once-a-week parent-child class, then add a second day of class that the students attend on their own. This class is a great option for students who haven't quite mastered toilet training, who do not meet the age requirement for part-day preschool but are ready to give up afternoon naps, or who have limited experience being away from their parent/caregiver.
Outdoor Learning Opportunities

Outdoor Explorers Preschool is a nature-focused, part-day class that takes place in the outdoor classroom at the Early Childhood Center. Students should be prepared to spend the entire class time outdoors, though there is a dedicated indoor classroom for inclement weather and snack/bathroom breaks. Right outside our doors is the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes park reserve, which provides a vast laboratory for our investigations. Parents/caregivers join the class bimonthly at Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes, and a Wargo naturalist joins us at the Early Childhood Center several times to provide linkage between lessons at the two sites. Students will need appropriate clothing for the seasons. Assistance is available for families who cannot afford to purchase necessary clothing.

Other part-day classes at the Early Childhood Center have occasional access to the outdoor classroom, and the 3-day afternoon class has dedicated time for outdoor exploration.
Full-day classes take advantage of each school’s unique surroundings and may take walking field trips.

Early Release Days
Full-day classes have an early release day most months beginning in October. On these Fridays, students are released at 1 pm. (Afternoon Pre-K Kids Club care is not available on early release days.) Please note that these early release days are only for preschool; K-12 classes have standard school hours on these dates. These afternoons allow our staff from various locations the opportunity to meet together for collaboration and training.

Before/After School Care (full-day classes only)
Full-day class families may choose to add childcare by utilizing before and/or after school care through Pre-K Kids Club. Attendees can be dropped-off/picked-up anytime during the care window, but the daily rate is the same regardless of the length of care. Families must choose at least two days/week for morning and/or afternoon care. Space is limited. See Pre-K Kids Club for more information.
Important: For 2026-27, Pre-K Kids Club registration will not open until April 27 at 8 am. This is to ensure that siblings can be approved at the same time. Because Pre-K Kids Club care takes place primarily in the preschool classrooms, we anticipate being able to accommodate all preschoolers needing care who register early.
Sibling Care (part-day classes only)
Sibling care is available only during the required parent attendance period for all part-day classes. Sibling care is for children ages 3 months to 5 years, and space is limited. (Infants may be kept in class until 3 months old.) Sibling care for Outdoor Explorers Preschool will take place at Wargo Nature Center.
Fees for sibling care are below. Families can indicate their need for sibling care as part of the preschool registration process. For more information on sibling care practices and expectations, see our family handbook.
| Sibling Care Fees | |
| Class | Monthly Fee |
| Tuesday/Thursday 9:30-11:30 | $20 |
| Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9:30-11:30 | $20 |
| Monday-Thursday 9-12:30 (sibling care 9-10) | $10 |
| Outdoor Explorers 12:30-3:00 | $12.50 |
Getting Ready for Preschool
Families can be surprised when their preschooler struggles with the structured nature of preschool. Some of the skills we expect from our preschoolers are not always expected at home or in daycare, such as:

- Following directions
- Waiting their turn
- Sharing with others
- Standing in line
- Eating without assistance
- Wiping nose, washing hands
- Asking to use the restroom
- Stopping an activity when directed
Centennial Preschool is ready to meet students wherever they are in their development, but you can help prepare your child for a successful start at school by practicing some of these skills in the year prior to preschool:

- Give your child multi-step directions: “Take off your shoes and put them in the closet.”
- Incorporate waiting into your day: “I’ll help you with that as soon as I put this away.” “Let’s eat lunch first, then we can play with that toy.”
- Demonstrate patience when standing in line at the store
- Allow your child to open food packages on their own
- Demonstrate proper hygiene techniques
- Encourage your child to ask for what they want. Offer choices so they can express their opinion: “Do you want milk or water with lunch today?”
- Give time warnings before major transitions in the day: “We’re going to play for five more minutes, then we have to go to our appointment.” “In two minutes we are going to clean up and get ready for dinner.”
- Give children opportunities to use the bathroom independently including changing clothing and wiping.

I’ve submitted an online registration and have received an email confirmation saying it is pending. When will my child’s pending contract be reviewed/approved?
You will receive a confirmation email if/when your child is placed in a class. Registrations received during the lottery period will be reviewed in randomized order. Post-lottery registrations will be reviewed on the first working day of each month in the order received so long as space is available and registration requirements are complete. See the registration checklist above for more information. Families will be notified if a spot is not available.
After my child is placed in a class, when will I receive additional information about starting school in the fall?
Can my child attend Centennial Preschool if we don’t live in the Centennial School District?
Yes! Centennial Preschool is open to all students regardless of district membership. Please note that out-of-district Centennial Preschool students must still complete an open enrollment application to attend kindergarten in the Centennial district. Centennial Preschool students do not receive any priority for open enrollment.
Does Centennial Preschool use a curriculum?
Yes, Centennial Preschool utilizes Creative Curriculum for Preschool. Creative Curriculum is approved by the state of Minnesota. To read more about the learning centers in our classrooms and the questions we use to promote thinking at each center, click here.
How does Centennial Preschool measure student progress?
Centennial Preschool uses the assessment tool Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) to measure student growth throughout the year. The DRDP assessment is a formative assessment instrument and represents a full continuum of development from early infancy up to kindergarten entry.
Assessment is completed bi-annually: once in the fall and once in the spring. The DRDP is an assessment tool approved by the state of Minnesota.
How many numbers and letters will my child learn in preschool?
Our main goal for students is to see growth, which is why we assess students in the fall and spring. These assessment results show us where students are at when they enter preschool, what they already know, and how we can support their learning at a deeper level. For some students this may simply mean more exposure to letters and numbers, but for others it may be writing their name and being able to identify every letter/sound in the alphabet. We do aim to have our students know at least half of the letter names/sounds by the end of preschool.
From Centennial Kindergarten teachers:
Your child will be learning so much in Kindergarten, so try not to stress out if they don’t have all the academic skills before entering Kindergarten. There are a few basics your child should be able to accomplish before Kindergarten, but know that these skills will continue to develop during their Kindergarten year:
-
Identify the letters in their name
-
Write their name (all uppercase is okay)
-
Know the difference between letters and numbers
-
Count from 1-20
-
Knowing that words are made up of sounds
My child is academically advanced for his/her age. How will the teacher support his/her learning?
Each preschool classroom is made up of students from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of previous learning experiences. For those students who may be more advanced in their academics, teachers will assess their skills in the fall and differentiate learning activities based on each child’s skills. For example, one group of students may be practicing identifying their name and tracing the letters, while others are practicing writing their name without any tracing or assistance. And remember that while a student’s academic skills may be more advanced, their social-emotional skills are just as important, which is why we focus on both areas of learning in our classes.
Students may be playing together in one center, but their learning may look different. For example, two students may be at the dramatic play center in a pretend restaurant. One student may be “writing” the menu using invented spelling or symbols and drawings, while another may be practicing letters and writing words. Both are learning through play together, but are learning at their own pace and practicing different skills.
Students who are more advanced can be wonderful role models in the classroom and can encourage and support their peers!
Will my child be doing worksheets in Centennial Preschool?
Children learn in a variety of ways, but at Centennial Preschool we believe children learn best through hands-on, interactive play. Research on learning in early childhood classrooms, shows that worksheets are not the most developmentally appropriate way children learn foundational concepts, like math and reading.
Before a child can complete a worksheet, they need to strengthen their hand and finger muscles to hold a pencil. Before a child can sit and focus on a worksheet, they need to practice self-regulation and impulse control. Before a child can understand more abstract concepts like letters, numbers, and what they mean, they need to practice this abstract thinking through imaginative, pretend play. Completing a worksheet does not necessarily mean a child is comprehending or understanding the content of that worksheet. These are all things we focus on in Centennial Preschool: providing play-based learning opportunities for students to practice the skills needed for more challenging academic learning.
My child has an IEP. Can they attend Centennial Preschool?
Many Centennial Preschool classes are inclusive of students with special needs. We work closely with the Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program to determine class placements that offer the greatest likelihood of student success. When necessary, additional paraprofessional and/or teacher support will be provided by the ECSE team. In cases where the IEP specifies a number of preschool days, a student's Centennial Preschool contract cannot exceed those days.
Does Centennial Preschool provide meals/snacks for students?
Full-day students have the option of a free grab-and-go breakfast and hot lunch (or alternate meal) each school day. Students may choose to bring a cold lunch from home instead.
Full-day classes and the afternoon part-day classes offer a snack each day. We appreciate any snack donations to the classroom. Families should communicate any food allergies or sensitivities to their student's teacher.
While school meals are now free, families who qualify are encouraged to complete an Application for Educational Benefits to ensure they are receiving any needed services.
Is Centennial Preschool Parent Aware rated?
Does my child need to have completed an Early Childhood Screening in order to participate in Centennial Preschool?
Yes. Please be advised that having completed (or scheduled, if your child is not yet 3) an early childhood screening is required before your child’s contract request for Centennial Preschool is approved. Appointments may be scheduled online using your Eleyo account, by email to escreenings@isd12.org, or by calling 763-792-6120. Screening is a free service and is required for enrollment in a district preschool program or kindergarten.
What is the ratio of teachers to students and who will be teaching my child each day?
What happens when school isn't in session? Is Centennial Preschool open?
Centennial Preschool is not open on non-school days. If there is a planned non-school day and it isn’t a holiday for our staff, we offer care for full-day students through Pre-K Kids Club at an additional fee. (You must have a pre-existing Pre-K Kids Club contract to use non-school day care.) Watch for more information via email and click here to register.
